Two teams of 5 players endeavor to sink a leather ball into the rival's basket that is located at a height of 3.05 m. The only difference to „pedestrian" basketball is that all players are sitting. All of them - also the „pedestrians", as the non-handicapped are called.
A score system enables players of different degrees of handicap to play together: the higher the degree of handicap, the lower the score. Pedestrians get the maximum score of 4.5 points. The five active players of a team must not have more than 14 points in the court.
To promote women playing in male teams, the bonus settlement was changed to the effect that the team in question receives a bonus of 1.5 points for each female player in the court.
Apart from a few exceptions, the same rules apply as for „pedestrians". Basically, every player holding the ball, be he in a wheelchair or on his feet, can only move forward by dribbling the ball. In wheelchair basketball, this means that the player must dribble the ball once at the latest every time he turns the wheels twice. To use both hands, the ball is placed on the player's lap between the dribbling motions.
This is even more difficult if one or more rivals attack the player. In wheelchair basketball, mutual blocking and screening is of top importance.
This calls for teamwork both on and off the court of course.
